Mike Butcher Named Angels Pitching Coach

I’m on the road in Cocoa Beach, Florida … MLB.com reports that the Angels have hired Mike Butcher away from Tampa Bay to be the pitching coach in 2007.

“Butch” was the Angels’ roving pitching instructor and thought by many to be Black’s successor, but left last winter to be Joe Maddon’s pitching coach at Tampa Bay. Looks like that prediction came true after all.

UPDATE 7:30 AM PST November 19, 2006 — The Tampa Tribune reports that the Devil Rays have hired former Astros pitching coach Jim Hickey to replace Butcher. Hickey was dismissed by Houston after the 2006 season and replaced by Dave Wallace, a one-time candidate for the Angels job.
